I pulled a fast one on mother nature and switched hemispheres in a mere 14 hours. She is not letting me off easy with the low temperatures and short days I am experiencing in Malibu. Sunset...5 pm!
I am really enjoying being back in California for the most part though. Swimming in the Pepperdine Pool, coffees at Cross Creek, and the biggest social event of the semester is happening right now, finals. My outside perspective on this event has finally shed light on my theory of finals being more of a social event than anything. The students come together for the final examinations of their semester, everything potentially riding on these exams, and what comes out is in form of a mixer. "I have not slept for 24 hours" one student will proclaim with a sense of honor; just as another perks up, "I've been up for 3 day's!" The library is full of these students buzzing on coffee, scoring "study enhancing drugs", and occasionally checking out the study guide for that test in 6 hours. Only in American colleges could an atmosphere like this be created around such a seemingly serious event. Cheers to George Pepperdine.
